Career of Shaquille O’Neal
NBA Superstar: In 1992, Shaq became the first overall pick for the Orlando Magic. A year later, Shaq was named the Rookie of the Year and voted an All Star-starter that had not been accomplished since Michael Jordan. In his second season, he helped the Magic reach their first play-off series. The next year, they made it to the finals. However, it lost to the Houston Rockets.
Shaq was disrupted by injury for a good deal of the 1995-1996 season, although the Orlando Magic still finished the regular season with a winning record. In the playoffs that year, Shaq and the Magic won the first two rounds, but they were eventually defeated by Michael Jordan’s Chicago Bulls.
In the year of 1996, Shaq was part of the men’s Olympic basketball team in Atlanta. That group went on to win the Olympic gold medal. It was during the Olympics which Shaq announced his plans to join the Los Angeles Lakers when tensions rose amongst his coach, teammates and local Orlando Media. Later, the Lakers offered Shaq a seven year $121 million deal. Shaq paired with a teenaged Kobe Bryant, bringing two of the game’s greatest names together on one team. But, while his first some years with the Lakers were promising, they failed to clinch a championship. Shaq battled against his injury and personnel changes until a change in leadership turned things around.
The arrival of former Chicago Bulls coach, Phil Jackson in the 1999-2000 season set the Lakers on a path which made them a dominant force for years to come. Phil Jackson challenged Shaq and led him to improve his defensive game. Finally, Shaq and the Lakers won the NBA championship that year, and then went on to win the title the next two years in a row.
In the year of 2004, Shaq was traded to the Miami Heat. The following year, he signed a five -years contract with the team for $100 million. Although he could probably have asked for more money, he stated that it was another championship he was after. The next year, the team got their opportunity, as the Heat defeated the Dallas Mavericks to clinch the team’s first ever title and Shaq’s fourth.
Beginning in the year of 2008, Shaq’s days of long-term contracts with the teams had come to an end. That year Shaq was traded to the Phoenix Suns where, for the first time since his rookie season, he failed to create the playoffs. At the end of his first season with the team, Shaq was traded to free up the budget. One more year assignment would follow, including with the Cleveland Cavaliers and his final season with the Boston Celtics.
