Once his performance in ‘A Soldier’s Play’ in 1981, he was introduced to director Spike Lee who went on to cast him for small roles in his films named ‘School Daze’ (1988) and ‘Do the Right Thing’ (1989). During his time, Jackson also struggled with heroin and cocaine addictions, fortunately, he successfully completed rehab.

The early 1990s, Jackson gained more recognition with films including ‘Goodfellas’ (1990), ‘Jungle Fever’ (1991), ‘Patriot Games’ (1992), ‘Jurassic Park’ (1993), ‘True Romance’ (1993) and ‘Amos & Andrew’ (1993).

According to DNA tests, Jackson partially descends from Gabon. In 2019, he became a naturalized African country citizen. He graduated from Riverside High School after attending several segregated schools. Between the 3rd and 12th grades, he was in the school of orchestra.

He also attended Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia. He originally intended to pursue a degree in marine biology. He finally ended up switching his major as he developed an interest in acting once he joined an acting group to earn extra points in class.

Jackson is also capable of playing the trumpet, flute, piccolo and French Horn. He has a stuttering problem, however he learned how to act like people who did not stutter.

In 1972, before graduating, he was the co-founder of ‘Just Us Theater’. Then in 1980, he married La Tanya Richardson as a sport channel producer and actress. The couple met while attending Morehouse College in Atlanta. They have a daughter, Zoe who was born in 1982.
