Apart from a career in music, Dr. Dre also took more various entrepreneurial pursuits. He and music producer Jimmy Lovine co-created the consumer electronics company Beats By Dre acquired by Apple in May 2014 for $3 billion.
At the time of the sale, Dr. Dre and Jimmy both owned 25% of Beats by Dre. They each eventually earned $750 million per-tax from the deal. After the sale, he was left with a post-tax fortune once combined with his other assets of $780 million.
As a throwback, they originally partnered with Monster Cable to produce the first Beats by Dre studio headphones which were launched in July 2008. Mobile phone manufacturer HTX bought 50.1% of Beats for $309 million in August 2010, valuing the company at roughly $618 million.
HTC sold half its stake back to Dr. Dre and Jimmy for $150 million in July 2012, retaining a 25% stake. HTC then sold the remaining 25% stake back to them for $265 million in September 2013.
That same time, Beats announced that it had received a $500 million investment from private equity firm Carlyle Group. This company valued Beats at $1 billion for the first time. Then, it launched a subscription music service named Beats Music in January 2014.
After weeks of rumors, on May 28, 2014, Apple officially confirmed that it was acquiring Beats by Dre for $3 billion. Apple paid $2.6 billion in cash and $400 million in stock for the company. Dre and Jimmy both owned 25% of Beats at the time of the sale and Dre received $100 million worth of Apple shares.

In addition, Dr. Dre spent his money on real estate with a total value of $80 million. He also donated $70 million in 2013 to the University of Southern California to establish the USC Jimmy Lovine and Andre Young Academy for Arts, Technology and the Business of Innovation. Dr. Dre’s Career
Dr. Dre’s rapper career began when he was a teenager where he frequented nightclubs to learn to be a DJ. He eventually became a member of electro-hop group World Class Wreckin’ Cry in 1984. Once meeting fellow rapper Ice Cube, he joined rap project N.W.A run by rapper, Eazy-E.
Under Eazy-E and Jerry Heller Ruthless Records, this group finally released their debut album ‘Straight Outta Compton’ in 1988. Their album would finally be certified double platinum and went down in music history as one of the most pivotal albums in the formation of hip hop.
In 1989, Ice Cube left N.W.A over disputes with Jerry Heller and Eazy-E related to royalty payments. Then, Dr. Dre also clashed with Eazy-E. In 1992, he finally left the group and soon co-founded Death Row Records with Suge Knight.
In 1992, he released his first solo album ‘The Chronic’ which eventually sold 6 milions albums worldwide and is presumed one of the most well-produced and popular hip-hop albums of all time. Andre Romelle Young or better known as Dr. Dre was born on February 18, 1965. He was raised in South Central Los Angeles during the budding West coast hip-hop scene. When he was 16 years old, he had a son with his girlfriend, a 15-year-old woman named Cassandra Joy Greene. His son, Curtis is also a rapper who performs under the name Hood Surgeon. Reportedly, he didn’t meet his son after he was in his 20s.
In 1983, he had another child, a daughter named La Tanya Danielle Young. Then, in 1998, he and Jenita Porter also had a son who was given his father’s name Andre Young Jr. Unfortunately, his son died in August 2008 of a drug overdose.
