His mother’s name is Esther Anna and his father’s name is Carl Daniel Frehley. His father came from Pennsylvania and he was the son of Dutch immigrants. His mother came from North Carolina. Paul Daniel Frehley has a sister named Nancy and a brother named Charles who is a classical guitarist.

In 1964, Paul Daniel Frehley received an electric guitar as a Christmas gift. Then, he learned the instrument. He said that he never went to music school, he never took a guitar lesson, but everybody in his family plays an instrument. He also said that his mother and father played piano, his father was the church organist, and his brother and sister played piano and acoustic guitar.

When Frehley was 13 years old, he began to play guitar. His main influences include Jimi Hendrix, Buddy Guy, Albert Lee, Jeff Beck, B.B. King, Led Zeppelin, The Who, and The Rolling Stones.

When he was 13 years old, he graduated from Grace Lutheran School. Then, he became a student of DeWitt Clinton High School on Mosholu Parkway and Theodore Roosevelt High School on Fordham Road.

Where did the nickname ‘Ace’ come from? This nickname came from friends in high school who said that he was ‘a real ace’ for his ability to get dates. When he was in high school, he was encouraged by a guidance counselor to enter graphic arts.

Ace Frehley joined with Kiss. However, Kiss was not the first band that he joined. The Outrage, The Four Roses, King Kong, Honey and The Magic People were his earliest bands. Then, he could obtain his significant success with a band named Cathedral and this was the reason which made him drop out of high school. Nevertheless, he went back and earned his diploma and he supported himself in the meantime with odd jobs such as furniture, mail and liquor delivery.

In the early 1970s, there was a big moment where he auditioned for the band that would become Kiss. At that time, his image was not satisfied enough. Nevertheless, his skill in playing guitar was undeniable. For that reason, Peter Criss, Gene Simmons, and Paul Stanley wanted him. Then, in 1973, this band had become Kiss officially and Frehley occupied the lead guitarist position. With the graphic art skills that he had, he designed the lightning-bolt logo of the band.

This band adopt stage personas to complete with makeup and costumes. The name ‘The Spaceman’ was adopted by Ace Frehley because he loved science fiction. However, even though Kiss shows potential, Ace found that his income was not enough to pay the bills. So, he decided to be a cab part-time driver. At the end of the year, the members of Kiss were paid a $50- per week salary from their manager and it permitted Frehley to quit his job.

In 1974, Kiss released a debut album in self title. Ace Frehley wrote two songs for this album and those included Cold Gin. In this time, Ace Frehley was not confident with his voice to sing so that Gene Simmons took over the majority of vocal tasks. It happened until 1977 when he sang Shock Me for the album Love Gun. Nevertheless, Ace Frehley wrote a lot of songs for this band.

In 1978, eponymous solo album was released by each member of this band. Ace Frehley’s album was the most popular and sold the most copies. His song entitled New York Groove was at the Top 20 charts in the United States. Then, Ace Frehley got his confidence in his ability to write a song and he became more active and creative in Kiss. A number of songs were contributed by him for the albums entitled Dynasty and Unmasked.

In 1982, Ace Frehley decided to left the band completely and then he received one-quarter of the share in the Kiss partnership which happened until 1985. With it, he took 25% of the profits for the albums Lick It Up and Animalize even though he did not contribute anything to the production.

Ace Frehley then formed a band named ‘Frehley’s Comet’. This band signed a deal with Megaforce Records and then in 1987 a self-titled album was released by this band. The album got into charts well and it sold almost 500,000 copies.
